A 52 tooth is about 18% larger than a 44 tooth. The engine of a bike with a 44 tooth sprocket at 25 mph is turning the same speed as a 52 tooth bike at about 21 mph.

In other words, no, if you are riding at 15-20 mph, the sprocket is making no difference in mileage.

I have no idea where all this is going, but I'm really enjoying reading it. The gist of what I'm getting so far seems to be what I said; the larger sprocket alone just isn't going to cut my mileage in half.
