Here's some pics of a V-brake conversion I recently did for a customer. Upgraded from caliper brakes because he carries a child in a rear seat and needed better brakes.

did you also change out the handle? i did this and the brakes seem soft. or am i not adjusting them right?
Need to be adjusted right and have a dead straight rim to give best feel and power.
Less slack than caliper brakes will return the feel. New pads can make a big difference too!
