I bet one of the advantages the GX160 engine had over the prior record holding engine was that the GX160 does not require an internal oil pump which causes a small hp draw on overall power available. A splash system runs with less parasitic loss.

The previous record holder used a Lifan engine with a gearbox. I assume the Lifan engine is a copy of a Honda motorcycle engine. You'd think the gearbox would be an advantage over our single speed.

Pat did some testing with gear ratios before heading out to Bonneville. So he knew what the tallest gear was that our engine could pull. With the tallest gear ratio the bike could take off from a dead start on its own. These GX engines make great low end torque. We did give our rider a push start in order to not stress the expensive clutch as much.

The Honda GX engines and their clones have proven to be great performers time and time again. There was so much more I wanted to do with this engine while we were in Bonneville. We kept breaking the record which required the bike to go to impound where we were not allowed to touch it. We did very little tuning during speed week. I look forward to next year where hopefully we'll have the chance to squeeze the most possible power out of this engine.

Wow, there's a wee bit of room for improvement........can't be too much more without going turbo or supercharging. This is the stuff champions are made of!

A gearbox always will show a HP loss due to friction. This is why transmissions get hot. A gearbox would always have a disadvantage to a single speed set up like the Bonnieville Flyer was using. Plus the internal oil pump too. I would say that the only way the record could be taken from you is for someone else to have a like set-up. Yes, keep attending with refinements and you will hold this record for a long time. So why did the engine stop running at the end? Fuel related?

Why use 4 strokes? A 125 MX engine could go way faster.
The record class that they were aiming for was 175CC A-PF
P stands for push rod engine
F stands for race fuel

I don't know of any 2 strokes that use push rods?
A 125 MX engine would be in a different class.

If you had of read the post above with the speeds you
might have noticed that the 125 cc bike in the same class
went faster than the 175 cc Bonneville Flyer.

15-Aug-12 35B Bonneville Flyer 175CC A-PF 73.526 Gunther Maier

15-Aug-12 576B Darold Cummings 125CC A-PF 77.721 Darold Cummings
Does anyone know what engine that 125 cc was running?

Prolly a Suzuki 125.......or a Honda. Doubt it was a KTM.

The single-pot 124.7cc DOHC, liquid-cooled and fuel injected engine is an entirely new design for the 125 Duke
I think that you no read anything in this thread?

The record class we are discussing is restricted to 4 stroke push rod engines.

Over head cam engines would be in another class at Bonneville and yes
they have higher speeds to beat.

Gosh I am sorry I did not bring up KTM? I have read this thread very thoroughly from the very get go. Never had a problem with what they have done. i have been very exited for them. This has been the greatest news ever!!

So what is your point:rolleyes:
