Any bicycle that's not "human powered" is 100% illegal in New York State. I still ride mine around the block sometimes but it really sucks that if a cop wants to throw the book at me, not only can they confiscate my bike but also drop tons of tickets on me, and even arrest me.
The law even applies to electric bicycles but those aren't quite as loud and usually don't attract much attention.
