Welcome to the forum. We're glad you've joined.
Do they still build tractors in Peoria? Had an uncle that worked for Caterpillar since the 50s.

Hey Tom,

Caterpillar is worldwide now, I actually moved here to go to work for them. I couldn't find much to do here hence the motorized bicycle project!

Hi all! I am Dave, and in Creve Coeur. Might as well say in Peoria.
I have ridden everything since the early 50's. Back then I had a
couple of motorbikes, but started on motorcycles in 1956 to
deliver papers. I had a very large route and needed something
larger and faster to do such a large route. The Cushman I had
wasn't too bad for delivery, but was a bear to maneuver across
rough ground. The early Mopeds were just completely out of
the question, too.

I am presently looking to get a motor for one of the two old
bicycles I just acquired. I used to have one of the old
Schwinn 26" bikes I had mounted a motor on to ride. For
those around the Peoria area, it was back before Sheridan
Village was built. At that time the area there was nothing
but farm and weed fields.

Presently I have my Honda Gold Wing Interstate motorcycle,
but I want something smaller for local riding. Even though my
Honda gets 45 mpg in town, being a highway cruiser is just
too big for much local and town riding. A motorbike would be
just the ticket for my wife and I for local and other short
distance rides.

I just got the call today that I will get the two bikes, so
have just started looking for engine kits. I would prefer a
4 stroke instead of the 2 stroke, but I don't know if I can
squeeze the cost for one of those out of my SS income.
I still remember the days when I could buy a motor for
a bike for about $25, and that was for a new motor.

Since I am licensed for motorcycles I don't care if the
engine is larger than the 49cc limit that requires a license
here. If anyone knows of a good used, or new engine that
can be had for a cheap enough price for my pocketbook,
please let me know in here, or by email.

It is good to see a forum like this on motorbikes. I am
finding that in this day and age they have again become
popular. More and more are switching to motorcycles or
motorbikes these days.

I am a member of A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois that is very strong
in Illinois for freedom of the road for all bikers, and very
strong on safety education, and political activism for riders.
With over fifty years of riding, I am pleased to find such
an organization for riders.

Again, it is nice to be here.

Welcome to all the new guys here in the Peoria area. Helplessoldman and I are both here in Peoria.

I look forward to seeing your builds progress.

Thanks for the WC Catfisher. Isn't it wonderful that we have the
good fortune for getting a lot of catfish around here? Thank
goodness for the river and all the various lakes n things. lol

I have lived in Peoria for most of my life. Before I retired I was
also in the uniform business (a family business) here. We did a
tremendous volume of work for Caterpillar all over the world
as well, and most cities and counties in all of their various
divisions.

One day we should meet for coffee. I am always available
for a coffee stop. Until then, take care.

Dave.

welcome to the forum from St Louis Missouri ,
Thanks HuffyD. I look forward to meeting all in here.

I had to drive my truck today, which I hate due to
the 10 mpg it gets, but ..... I picked up two, old
Schwinn bicycles that were given to me. Both are
in working condition. One does have a flat tire, and
the seat was not mounted to the bike. At least it
is all there. My wife took to riding the other one right
off the bat. I guess that dictates as to which bike I
fix with a motor first. Now I will have to decide which
motor to buy. On my SS income I don't have much
for spending on anything each month, so I must decide
what I am going to buy first. At the moment I am
not sure, but I might have to buy a new front tire
for my motorcycle before a motor kit for a bicycle.
With all the rain we have had here I sure need a very
good tire on the front wheel of the motorcycle, and
the one I have is not very good. I do have a couple
of things to sell that would give me enough to get
both the tire, and the motor. I do hope someone
needs a refrigerator and an electric clothes dryer.

I am looking for a property where I can build a home
with a good size garage for working on my many
projects. In that way I could work in any weather.
I would even get things done faster than what I
can do now. One to three acres outside of the city
would be perfect. Of course, the price would have
to be within my reach.

Many years back I went to school in Alton, IL. There
was some really nice parcels of land there then. Wish
I would have thought to have gotten one then.

I don't think I would be riding a motorbike to the
St Louis area, but I might on my motorcycle one day.

Take care,
Dave.

Hi Nunyadam,

For a while today I thought I would have to drive down your way.
A surgeon had suggested me to see a neurologist down there to
have a nerve conduction test run for my back problem. He finally
got one here to do the test. If it doesn't get what he wants I
will have to go to the one in Springfield. I was down there in May.
I was on the A.B.A.T.E. ride for motorcycle awareness on the 5th.
I used to get down there two or three times every week. Since I
retired I no longer do work on problem issues with vehicle titles. I
used to handle a lot of those for people and got down to the SOS
offices quite often. I did that independently, but as an officer I also
regularly went with another officer down there on some weekends
for the night life. Up here it was kind of a hassle to go out for a
quiet, and pleasant night where everyone seemed to know us.
If I am to get down there in the future I may let you know in here
when that would be planned. Maybe we could then meet for coffee.

Dave.

H'mmmm could that possibly have been Dr Trudeau you would have been seeing here?

Right on the head of the nail! I wish I could, but I could
only make it if I could ride my motorcycle. It does 60 mpg,
but my truck only gets 10 mpg. I can't afford that much
with the truck. To make it on my motorcycle I could not
know enough in advance what the weather would be to
make an appointment. In that case I could miss two or
three appointments before I could make it. The only other
way would be a spontaneous walk-in. That would most
likely be a wasted trip.

Dave.

Can't believe I missed this tread a year ago. I live just 30 miles west of Peoria. Sorry I missed chatting with you guys on here last year.
Hi ckangaroo70.
30 miles West would put you somewhere from the Hanna City
to Farmington area. Not very far at all. I used to live in Norwood.
I get out Farmington road area quite a bit, usually about five to
six miles West of Peoria city limits.

Not much has gone on in here since the last posts of last year.
I even missed checking in here for a time as I have had to
make another move in the area. I still haven't been able to
find a new home in over a year now. I haven't even been able
to get an attorney to file my suit yet. I only have a year left
before I run out of time with the Statute of Limitations. I am
still working on that, and hope I don't have to file the case
myself.

If you are planning a trip in this way, try to let me know a
day o so in advance so that we might meet for coffee.

Till then,
Take care,
Dave.

Thats ok, I've been under such stress and pressure for the past year I missed it as well, and it was intended for me. I'm still hanging in there and the guys that are still here have forgiveness and patience in their blood. I'm getting ready for a new build and I'm sure I'll be seeking opinions to make some of my choices.

It's good to get back to the forum, I hope we all have a great summer.
