I got a 7 function bike computer from Walmart for around $23. Northern Tools sells a tachometer/ hour counter for around $50.
I've heard the mechanical speedos tend to fail quickly when used at motorbicycle speeds.
I use electronic. (or did until mine went wonky from interference...)
Still haven't replaced the battery which MIGHT fix the issue,
What I have found to work and last best on my bikes is a ch ap wireless speedo that I get off ebay, several vender sell them and they are the only type so far I hqve got to last, I've had one of them on all my bikes and I hqve one that is still working good after almost 4 years.
I will get a pic uploaded as soon as I can get on my computer, cant seem to get it uploaded off my Galaxy3 smart phone.

I'm running a Trailtech Vapor, has a tach with dual readouts (bar and number), speedometer, etc. Backlit when hooked up to 12V.
It's large and expensive tho.

Here is a link to the speedometer I been using on all my bikes the last 4 years, replace battery about once a year which can be found very cheap now days, I think I paid around $1.50 for 4 new batteries last year at Harbor Freight tools and I saw some at Big Lots store this last week really cheap, very common battery, easy to set up and it checks out accurate with my GPS.
This seller has them listed for $7.99 or best offer, I'll bet $6.99 will have one shippd to your door if you offer that amount.
Hope this helps, for the money I have'nt found anything that beats these speedometers, haven't had a single failure since 2009.

Yeah that is a little pricey for some Aleman, but it looks like a nice little unit, I plan to get one of the TTO Tachometers for my next build, actually planned on it for a long time just never done it.

You're very welcome, best bang for the buck when all you want is a good inexpensive speedo that will take the vibes in the bars and has proven for me to be very reliable and accurate.

I suppose it depends on your weather and eyesight as to what works best, for me here in the desert anything electronic is a waste of money for me, I have like 5 little cheap speedo's on the 'useless' shelf.
Between the heat, sun glare and tiny digital display they either fail from heat or way to difficult to glance at for my current speed so I just use a big 'ole analog speedo.
$25 at my local bike shop.

I will be putting a motor on the bike soon,so it might start getting beat up ,wonder if I should change the tires 20 years on tires too much? there still brand new looking ,I don't see any rot ,
I live in central Texas from now till September it will be triple digit hot almost every single day so I deal with some heat here as well, these speedos have held up good for me here, if the bike sits in direct sun for a while the speedo face will dark n and seem a little dicey but as soon as I get going and it cools some its right back to perfect, display on these is plenty big to see clearly at a glance.
I trid the analog stuff thats being sold today and they failed within just a few miles plastic stuff startex falling off, lens cover popped off, dial indicator hands cam off just n ver worked on any of my bikes, that sucks because that is actually what I would rather have.....
I do have an old Stewart Warner analog speedo that is currently on an old excercser bike that is made for use on a 26" wheel, it is all metal and has all metal gearing so I plan to remove it from exercise bike and use it on one of my future builds, im thinking it will likely hold up just fine.

How do u connect Trailtech Vapor, before ordering I want to make sher that I have what I need to connect it
If you get one of the the "generic conventional shocks, air cooled" variants, something like the 75-704 - all the instructions, fasteners, senders, connectors & wiring you'll need will be included, but read the fine print if purchasing from ebay or whatever to be sure it's complete. They do sell replacement senders ofc, but you'll not want to get them separately due to the cost increase.
While oddly it's possible to get Trailtech's products for less elsewhere, their website http://www.trailtech.net has extensive information & instruction, here's the PDF for the Vapor for example;

I have tried 2-3 or the years, and they have all failed after a short time (100-200 miles)
agreed on the digital speedos and the desert,,,either the screen goes black, the electronics get too hot causing a fluctuating readout, or they just vibrate to death
I have been looking for a cheap, reliable analog for a long time, and whenever I find one,,,no $$$
