IMO,,, not other than the items I mentioned before.

Some things to keep in mind:

1) most accessories for full-size machines won't fit onto what you've got at all, there's simply not enough room. The lathe tailstock accessories he lists are either MT4 or MT5, and you'd need an MT2. The "small" size of tool bits for a full-size lathe have shanks that are3/4-inch square, and your machine will only hold 1/2-inch-square, or maybe even only 3/8".

2) the mill motor you have will be working hard to take light cuts with a 1/2" mill bit in plain steel, so you won't benefit much from any mill bits larger than that. ..If he had some under-1/2-inch mill bits they might be worth looking at, but check online first to see what new ones would cost. ...When you need to make larger holes you will need to use either a rotary table or a boring head (~$70 at littlemachineshop).

3) a lot of the measuring tools listed are redundant, with only a limited range. You'll be a lot happier with one 8-inch caliper that you use for most stuff than with eight different-sized test calipers with a one-inch-range each. Maybe get a second one to confirm the first, but two is all you need. As the second caliper, a vernier (no dial) caliper is more reliable, costs a bit less and most do precision measuring in English & metric as well.

Dave, that is my next hope! Casting.

Man, MBs. brings ya to some great cross roads!
It's the racing bug more power faster God help me!- I can't buy all the neat stuff but I hope I can make it my self-they said reeds wouldn't work but I figured it out and they work good I tried to build an expansion chamber didn't work found a moped expansion chamber that will work 1/3 the price if I had real machine tools I would revers engineer the HT in to a scary little beast-they just need more Japanese parts retro fitted in them by sick-twisted men with to much time and no money FIRE AND SAND ARE CHEAP! tooling isn't

this is indeed a great thd.
when drilling a hole to close dimensions,if you drill it.01/.02 undersize then use correct size. should be close .002/.004 over.
old endmills make excellent boring bars. needs to be on center with the cutting corner on center. careful not to drag the flute in the bore. our ancient bridgeport had table shake real bad. i started using 3 flute endmills and it helped alot.
on the 4jaw chuck. permanentaly mark 2 of the jaws that are 90' apart. when you remove a part, loosen these two. when you put it back tighten these two. mark your part also for 2 jaws.

Every time I make steel stuff on my mill for a while and then need to make an aluminum part, I am always amazed at how much easier and nicer the aluminum cuts. With a sharp tool bit you can easily get a near-mirror-finish on a piece of aluminum in one pass and cutting with no lube; most steels won't cut nearly as nicely even with lube. They come out smooth, but don't look nearly the same.

...Of course sometimes you aren't free to choose, and other factors can basically require steel--but if you can use aluminum it is worth considering it for that reason alone.

---

With the lathe, it doesn't seem to make much difference if I'm cutting aluminum or steel for most kinds of operations.

Really like "that polished look"

Tools should be here any day now! Really can't wait to start making stuff.

Am sitting here next to the thing and she is just screaming at me to get started, lol.

I currently have a 7x10 , 9x20 and a mill drill and I love all
of them. I just made some custom hand grips for my bike
and a headlamp holding clamp as well ( the thieves will need
some allen wrenches to steal my light now) . Of course you'll
buy a lot of tools along the way but the nice thing about
these machines is that you can always make you're own
tools if you don't have them. I think you'll never regret
buying them. I know I haven't.

Very cool to read Don, thank you.

Really is pretty exciting, all the possibilities. I am spending hrs every day reading up on em and re-reading this thread. New language and steep learning curve fer the likes of me, lol.

Joined another forum on machining, (I am not cheating on you guys, it is a fling, lol) but man, they have been great. Is kinda funny being a brandy new, newbie. I forgot how intimidating that can be. But like our host, they have been nothing but kind and no one has called me an idiot yet. Although I am sure some have thought it, lol.

If you would like to see some pretty cool machining jobs
and a lot of tips try Home Model Engine Machinist. I'm not
a member there but lurk a lot. They have some really good
tips and a lot of upgrades for machines. They are really
helpful.

Really like "that polished look" ...
There is also a type of steel called "free-machining steel" that is made specially to cut easily and cleanly. It costs more money than plain 4130 tho', and you may have to mail-order it. $$$ Free machining steel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Most free-machining steel isn't weldable though,,,, which may another concern. 4130 steel is the best all-around type (brazes, welds and machines fairly easily).

The local place I got to sells new material and scrap. Mainly I buy 4130 steel and 6061 aluminum as those are the best all-around types, for thicker pieces. Mild steel and 5052 aluminum are also good for thick pieces, if that's all they have or it's cheaper.

If you're buying scrap or drop steel to do machining on, just tell the guy that you don't want anything extra-hard, like tooling plate. Also any round solid shafts with a keyway already cut, are probably already hardened as well. ...You can cut that material if you need to, but you will need carbide tools, you'll need use coolant while cutting, and it's still gonna take a looooong time. IMO not worth the hassle unless you need to use it.

Cool Blue. Good to know.

Come to find out the tools I ordered will not be here until next Tuesday. Was kinda bummed but like my first MB kit, the wait was good and it allows time to get information like you've posted. Just dawned on me, I had been considering buying a pre-keyed shaft.
Ya mighta pushed me out of a minor bullets path again.

Been looking all over and can't find the answer. (dumb question alert) The mill does not seem to come down low enough to cut a keyway. I have yet to put an endmill in so might be worrying fer nothing. But what would some thing be called that could be locked on the work bench vise? I sent 2 pics from my phone and will post.

Sitting here looking at it, gonna be close either way. Might just need an inch or 2 if that.

Also thinking I might cut one (hehe, he said cut one) in plastic just to check my math (which is really suspect) and see if it fits and to ease into learning the machine. Dunno, was watching a how2 vid and they used plastic to demonstrate.

Again, thanks to you guys, I am taking the safety issues of this machine very seriously. Which is a nice break from my usual approach to life, snicker.

Well this is fun and comforting but my machine is no longer posted on the HF web page. So either I am one of the few who purchased it or they know some thing I don't.

Wanted to use their pic to show what I am asking. Cell phone pics are still not here.

My best buddy is legally blind and sticks his face rite up to stuff he wants to see. But one day I walk in to the kitchen and he is bent over and has his face almost against the glass of the microwave screaming; "Hurry up, I haven't got all minute!" Was rolling with laughter and always comes to mind when I do not get what I want the nano second I want it.

Yep, they have a monthly project winner, that thing is tiny.
If you look around there's a guy in there that made and designed
a v twin, I think I want one for my bike lol. He also made a
scale 302 Ford, if you lookup miniature 302 on youtube he has
it running.Very cool. He's building the tranny for it now , it's a
toploader I think.

Don, it really does have my lil brain reeling. The truly endless possibilities. I am one of those guys who can't pick up a tool or look at some thing and not wonder. LOL! and now gonna try and make that stuff and find out why and how I was wrong.

But that is what I signed on for. Vast expense and failure coupled with fleeting moments of success.

(lol, dang that sounded bleak. I meant to sign on for nothing but "ra-ra" snork)
