Read your own link:
If sed BICYCLE has no centrifugal clutch then it is not - repeat NOT considered a motorized vehicle in the state of California.....As the thing remains a Bicycle by statute it then needs no plate......
I'm sure that California will some day get around to clarifying this obvious screw up but until then it's still a bicycle.....

Your second link is conjecture and e-legal as a police officer can not give any legal advice..... It's a huge no no....

SOME GUY FROM OREGON.
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/wcm/c...4063-a819-a5dfc8ff5691/reg230.pdf?MOD=AJPERES

Link does not have the words "centrifugal clutch" anywhere.
Can you read? It says "auto transmission"

Auto transmission means you can't manually change gears.
what kind of clutch is not specified anywhere.
A centrifugal clutch or manual clutch on our motors do not change gears
as in "auto transmission"
You can use an auto 2 speed or variable CVT like mopeds.

below where the 4 check boxes are: It says if you don't check
all then you are not a motorized bike so you have to register as
a Motorcycle.

If you are not a motorized bike or a motorcycle then you are just
illegal like a pit bike or mini bike.

A bicycle with a motor on it is not just a bicycle in CA.

I can quote all the links that are not conjecture but I can't be bothered
to do it again for the umpteenth time.

There you go, get educated on CA mb laws.

http://www.chp.ca.gov/publications/pdf/chp888.pdf

Driver's License (12804.9 VC).
The holder of a valid Class M-1 driver license or valid Class A, B, or C driver’s license with an
M-1 endorsement may operate any two-wheel motorcycle, any two-wheel motor-driven cycle, and any motorized scooter.

The holder of a valid Class M-2 driver license or valid Class A, B, or
C driver’s license with an M-2 endorsement
may only operate
any two-wheel motor-driven cycle or any motorized scooter.

A two-wheel motor-driven cycle includes, but is not limited to, a
motorized bicycle or moped as specified, or any bicycle with an
attached motor

Josh, you should be fine with a 49 HS 142 4-stroke direct drive 4G in CA.
It'll get you around if you help pedal up hills or gear low.

You loose some top speed, but gear as low as you can for your comfortable top speed and all the rest of the engines power is in torque to climb hills.

Laws where I live are pretty lax, but no kid that that can't a pass written driving test for the 'rules of the road' has no business riding anything motorized with traffic anyway.

All you hurt is yourself, but trust me, until you have some real road experience in real traffic you don't want play with it.

Every hard hit you take will come back to haunt you when you get older, it's not fun.

Thanks KC! Was the kit i showed you from bikeberry good or should i go for a better more high quality one? I'm fine with not being able to go faster than 20-25 as long as i can get up hills, even if it takes some pedaling too. I've heard that bikeberry uses bad, cheap parts, was going to look at gasbike for kits. Any recommendations?

Auto transmition means centrifugal clutch as does auto shift cvt etc.... In all 50 states.
Sorry to get your panties in a bunch. Didn't mean to.
No where in the California statute does it say that IF YOUR BICYCLE IS NOT A MOPED THEN IT'S A MOTORCYCLE........No where.... As has been litigated in California courts.....

So can I or can I not use one if it doesn't have a centrifugal clutch?

Exactly right, of course you can't register a motorized bike as a DOT regulated motorcycle.
So if you can't check the 4 boxes with a yes on the mb plate application,
the only other choice is to reg as a motorcycle.

But that is your only 2 choices.
If you can't do either then you are just illegal on the road like a pit bike or mini bike or any other home made contraption with a motor.

Don't wear panties cause I go commando. I only wear panties on special occasions.......

The manual clutch single speed China girl is technically illegal in CA but nobody cares because they are only a single speed and there is no mention of manual or centrifugal clutching.

Did you read this ^?
All the laws are there if you can interpret them?

Life lesson is to do your own research and don't rely on know
it alls like me or guys in Oregon with a bad panty jokes.

Bottom line is if cops in your area don't care and your parents
say it's OK then wear a full face helmet and have fun. ;)

PS: Don't buy the 4 stroke kit from the Berry cause the gearbox is junk.
Get a 4G like KC said.

Print out and read the Motorized Bicycle license plate application.

The info in the CHP pdf has not been updated.

The 2 HP law was upgraded to 4 HP on Jan 2015.
Also they are lying about the 2.5 HP. They make about 2.

Your link is the best 4 stroke kit from B-E.com

This code is about the 406 (a) mb license plate which comes with an ID card because it is a one time $21 and not yearly registration like a motorcycle.

Registration Card (4454, 4462 4020, 5030 VC). The
registration card or facsimile thereof shall be kept with the
vehicle for which issued and shall be presented for examination
upon demand of any peace officer.

A motorized bicycle is exempt from registration, but is required to display a special
license plate.

out of about 4 or 5 hundred bikes I've worked on, I saw 2 that had a plate & I'm not sure if it was just the reg plate for a bicycle or a motorized bike plate, or if there's a diff between the two kinds

most of my customers are illegals, or DUI guys, or out of state students that can't go all the way home to get a lic

OTOH, I note that a couple years ago there was one cop that hated these things & gave everyone a hard time - that stopped after a while, but not sure why & it was 20 miles from where I am

You must have missed this in your link:

A motorized bicycle does
not have the same equipment requirements as either a motordriven
cycle or a motorcycle.
Then I saw this:

A motorized bicycle is
exempt from registration, but is required to display a special
license plate.
But then there is this:

A "motorized bicycle" or
"moped" is any two-wheeled or three-wheeled device having
fully operative pedals for propulsion by human power, or having
no pedals if powered solely by electrical energy, and an
automatic transmission and a motor which produces less than 2
gross brake horsepower and is capable of propelling the device at
a maximum speed of not more than 30 miles per hour on level
ground. A "motorized bicycle" is also a device that has fully
operative pedals for propulsion by human power and has an
electric motor that meets all of the following requirements:
(1) Has a power output of not more than 1,000 watts.
(2) Is incapable of propelling the device at a speed of more than
20 miles per hour on ground level.
(3) Is incapable of further increasing the speed of the device
when human power is used to propel the motorized bicycle faster
than 20 miles per hour.
As the 2 stroke version of the motorized bicycle that the PO is referencing
has no automatic transmission and is not electric, it falls into a gray eria .
This is one of the reasons that they are tolerated in California.
I think at the age of 14 or 15 the PO quallifies for a moped licence in California though. Don't quote me on that . But I seem to remember that this is the case.
The neighbor kid in San Diego rides one ( a moped ) has a plate and as far as I know, is legal... But a quick call to the DMV will solve your dilemma....

Name calling ? I'll just assume your kidding right...... And won't go there...

Yes, please do the research yourself on the DMV site then you won't be confused by trolling guys from Oregon who know nothing about CA mb laws and quote them without explanation and out of context.

PS: You ain't getting a moped license at 15 in CA.
