Hello

I've been interested in motorized bicycles for some time and recently fopund this site. I am considering building a bike, primarily to tak e on vacation along wiht the RV. I would like it to be legal in my home state, but making it legal here in PA seems a daunting task. Not too sure what I'm going to do now. I have an old Raliegh Colt, a chainsaw and a degree in mechanical engineeering with a minor in gunsmithing, so I think I could make the parts go together I just have to figure out the legal side first..

There's a rather long thread about going legal in PA in the rules and regulations forum. Probably a good place to start. Welcome to the forum! I'm originally from northern York County btw!

I read that mulri page thread and it seems like a lot more work and frustration than it ought to be. What is the actual story on PA Senate Bill 1444 from 1978? I s it for real? If so, is all the rigamarole to be legal really necessary?

It is a bill, that did not make it into law from my understanding. The moped fact sheet says that a moped licence plate is issued and that annual registrationn fee is $9. Here is a link to the fact sheet. http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/fact_sheets/fs-momo.pdf. The correct way to go about registering a home built moped is this: Meet all of the requirements in subchapter J found here: http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/pub_45/section_j.pdf. Then you need to go for an enhanced inspection at an enhanced inspection station. http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/inspections/enhancedstations.pdf. They will inspect your bike using the MV426B form here: http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/mv_forms/mv-426B.pdf. you need to include a detailed description of the specially constructed moped along with pictures with the form. PENNDOT will assign the VIN number along with a title. The VIN plate they give you will be put on your bike, obviously. The you can go to a notary and register it like you would a car. Mopeds are exempt from the annual inspection, but not the initial enhanced inspection. I recommend talking to yodabob or jbcruisin as the have gotten their bikes registered in pa.
