Howdy from Dallas!

If you are using the heavy wide chain, you can probably get away without using a tensioner. The lighter chains have to be more snug to prevent derailing, so they telegraph chain slap and engine vibration to the rear dropout, and can make your feet numb!

See my user pics for my case mounted idler wheel.

I also have ideas for using an idler wheel from the tractor company, mounted between the upper and lower run of chain and mounted to the case where it can move up or down a little. Something like this, but a small one Flat Idler Pulley - 1185251 | Tractor Supply Company It should work like a "ghost ring" to tension the chain.

got it moked up today...

im guessing i dont have to use the chain tensioner if i can get the chain slack right?... right ?

I found the chain tensioner to be unnecessary after i re-sized my chain. However there are a few reasons i wouldn't use it at all.
1. Too difficult to attach to a re-sized chain.
2. Fear that it may come loose while i'm riding and catch my spokes(sending me to a grinding hault face first into the asphalt)
3. They look kinda lame, lol.

The kit idler pulleys do look kind of lame. You can round off the edges on the bracket for looks and tack-weld them to steel frames, which would get the job done, but a lot of guys are making their own spring-type tensioners.

You can probably sell the kit tensioner to someone else. The point of them is mostly to raise the chain off the chainstay bc. some frames will not clear the chain, esp with the big cog like a 44 or 52. Mounting the engine high, with a tall mount on the downtube, helps.
