But the bugs up this way are a lot smaller!

No kidding, a woman broke up with me and flew home from Puerto Rico because some one told her that in the spring and mating season, the roaches flew. LOL, she was on the next flight and gawn. G A W N gone.

Re: "Winter MBing, tips and tricks"

I love the cold. Down here in the panhandle of fl, i don't ride much during the summer cuz it gets so hot. In the hottest days of summer, if you leave a old basketball or old soccer ball out in the sunlight it'll explode from the expanding air inside it!

Winter...is awesome!

If its below 55F i usually wear an undershirt, then a nice cotton sweater with a wind breaker jacket that has a thin cotton inner layer and jeans. My feet never get cold so i always wear the ankle socks. For my head i wear a hat that has the fake fur on the ear flaps. For being fake fur, it sure does keep my ears warm. II wear full gloves(not mittens). Ive tried riding without gloves last winter and the fingers got a bit stiff. Hard to use the clutch, and brakes. lol

We keep getting cold fronts then it'll warm up to like 78 but i think thats going away and winter is finally here. Every morning for the past week its been ~50F then it'll warm up to 55-60. A few times it'll get cooler cuz we get a few rain clouds. The weather specialists can't predict what the highs are. Last friday, they said it would be a low of 48F and a high of 65F. It never got above 55F.

When my family drove up close to Buffalo New York in the middle of winter years ago(8+years ago), it was the first time us kids had seen snow. My grandma is a yankee. We loved playing in the snow. Our great grandmothers neighbor had a above ground pool, and in the winter, it was a sold cylinder of ice. We'd crawl under the electric fence run across cow pastures, have snow ball fights, make snow angels, attempt to make snowmen. :) We went skiing and tubing for the first time at Kissing Bridge. We all loved it. Good memories. All the places we went, family trips were the greatest times of our young lives.

Yes Buffalo New York gets feet more snow than us ! we rarely in town now get more than 2 inches. So if you have studs your riding season is very long.
We are a northern extension of the Sonora desert. Usually our winter in town is about 20f at worst--- last year it went to 0f for a week only
Everybody thinks if you live in Canada that our weather is worse than the U.S.-- not so in Penticton and Victoria B.C.

Re: "Winter MBing, tips and tricks"

Yeah, winter's not too bad on the we(s)t coast here. This will be my fifth winter in Vancouver, at this point I really don't think I could go back to a southern Ontario winter even though I spent most of my life dealing with it. Although it would be nice to see the sun now and then between November and March.

I still laugh when we do get snow here, though... you'd think the end of the world was here. I've met people at work who say "If there's snow I won't come in to work." I don't understand it, myself.

Re: "Winter MBing, tips and tricks"

Velodrome found a nice set of chains in another thread, needs to be here too :)

They're from a company called Slipnot - bicycle traction systems. Those prices are for each tire, so compare that price to a single "pro" studded tire...

Found a review of them, w/vid over here.

I like the idea of being able to pop them on/off in 5min, might have to check out a pair this winter.

Re: "Winter MBing, tips and tricks"

this year will be my first year with a designated two stroke snow bike, the thumper is too nice to defile with wisconsin salt. I like them tire chains, but im sure with some time and some good needle nose pliers you could make your own set from some small chain from the hardware store.

Re: "Winter MBing, tips and tricks"

ok so i guess the only real tip for winter riding is proper preparation

first dressing well i wear
a bomber hat, a face mask, and a old t shirt, for a neck and chest protecter,a set of cozy mittens, for a coat i am currently wearing a carhat the collar is really bad on those lets the wind right in (hence the old cut up t-shirt) i also wear snow pants and a safety vest

if its really chilly out i wear a second layer underneath coat and snow pants

ok so thats dress then theres tools of course and extra gas

i also carry extra gloves with me and a pair of socks with additional waterproof socks incase i get wet i can put the same boot back on with out loosing a toe

and then theres the survival pack it includes fire starters hand warmers knifes string all sorts of things basically i havent had to use any of this stuff this season but i carry it on me incase

other than that its all about defensive driving and choosing the best routes across town talk with local bicyclists they will tell you the best routes and travel across town
And you know the very first day you do not bring all that survival gear will be the very day you will need it . So if your like me and I see a lot of similarities in gear here!! once you start bringing something you cant stop bringing it

killercanuck? Are you still with us, now, a couple of years later? I've got the answer for your feet.

Put your bare foot into a plastic grocery sack. Then put a thick sock over that. Your feet still sweat. But the sock stays dry. And that makes a lot of difference.

If it's really cold, then you can put another grocery sack over the sock. With that, you can wear almost any boots and stay warm.

For even colder weather you can put a motorcycle boot rain cover over everything.

And I'll link to another thread that covers a lot of winter cycling ground.

http://motorbicycling.com/showthread.php?t=52090

I hope it's not immodest: it's a thread of mine.

But the more I think about it, I don't really care. I'm not all that modest anyway. I have a healthy supply of cheerful self-appreciation :)

So read and learn.
And have fun.
