The kit idler pulleys do look kind of lame. You can round off the edges on the bracket for looks and tack-weld them to steel frames, which would get the job done, but a lot of guys are making their own spring-type tensioners.
You can probably sell the kit tensioner to someone else. The point of them is mostly to raise the chain off the chainstay bc. some frames will not clear the chain, esp with the big cog like a 44 or 52. Mounting the engine high, with a tall mount on the downtube, helps.
