Perspective; my Dad bought his Whizzer motor kit in 1947 for $99.00. My last HT kit cost $105.00 ppd. a week ago. What a BARGAIN! I love 'em.

I think the 'all of the above' would be redundant since a voter can select all.

I for one don't really agree with "hopelessly unreliable" - I suspect it's the luck of the draw combined with the owner's tinkering experience, these engines after all are not just "bolt n'go" as advertised...

Still - it's a valid opinion and it'd be nice to see how many think that. It'd be even nicer if people would post why, but if this gets all dramatic and another 2 vs 4 stroke bladebla I'll step in as the heartless, cruel, overbearing bastid that I am and clean it up a bit ;)

It is simple and lightweight because the piston does so
many different things. Good power to weight ratio.

I went with Desposible becouse they are so cheap that I can get a replacment engine for 55.00 and not have to worry about tearing it down....

You're right BA, 'Hopelessly unreliable' is a little bit of an overkill... however 'More runtime hours = Decreases reliability' I think is more appropriate, but I think this is true for all engines. However, I think statistics would show that there are more HT engines that are short lived. Maybe we can change it to 'Unreliable Longevity'.

i would agree with bairdco , set em up right and treat them right they will treat you right (most of the time. ive built thirty in the last 6 months all but one still good

'User error'? so it's not 'user friendly'... :)

so what would be the lifespan if everything is left 'as is'... no replacements... longest period without any parts being replaced, including gaskets... :) ofcourse, under normal usage...

it depends on how long it takes you to install it, then about 5 minutes after that.

what i mean by user error, is improper installation, improper fuel mixture, half-a55ed repairs, improper torque, incorrect problem diagnosis, hillbilly performance mods... the list is endless.

plus, improper bicycle maintenance and riding habits.

i'm sure there's a lot of people out there who meet all of the above, and they're the one's who are gonna claim "hopelessly unreliable."

there's people who can unearth a tractor, half-buried in the frozen ground for 50 years and restore it to like new condition.

then there's people who can take a brand new motor out of a box, and wind up with a doorstop with no studs, and broken muffler and carb paperweights.

and then there's all kinds of people in between.

for some, the tiniest problem can be insurmountable, like a carb leak or a broken stud.

for others, a cracked case and a seized piston is just a way to make it better the next time.
