New rat rod in town....los angeles...build thread

So......my trucks in the shop and I need a project. I decided I would build a bike from scratch and not really have any clue what I was doing......almost tried to build out of emt until jeff with CCC steered me toward MK metal. That shows just how little i know about what im doing. I just got a welder and a bunch of tools and figured I'd give it a go. My welding sucks BUT I have a grinder :) remember its going to be a rat rod I do NOT want it pretty looking.

My goal is to have it done by the December mooneyes Christmas show so I can have it in the bed of my old truck. The bike will be covered in rust and look like a ratty super low rider

Any way here are a few shots of the bike now. First off I am re designing the front this is just a rough set up and the rear has not been shaped where the rear tire holds on. Also. This are not the handle bars just a piece of tubing to get ideas.

The front has air shocks which raise the front off the ground when I want to ride and then drops it on the frame so I don't need a kick stand. I tested it last night and it works perfect! I will either run a small compressor or inflate and deflate with co2 set up.

The gas tank is an old fire extinguisher from back in the day.....this will be a four stroke build since pedaling will be a pain In the ass due do the height. I will do a small shorty fender in the rear so my back doesn't get chewed up....

Got any suggestions lemme know

Felt 24 inch thick brick rear tire with wide felt rim and front 26 inch felt rim with quick brick

Also. There are no gussets or extra supports in yet. I just started few days ago. I was going to wait until it was done to post but thought I could get good suggestions along the way

It should definitely be "one of a kind".
ya i need to figure out a real name for it. was thinking Flea since most of my stuff is coming from flea markets i dunno. but when i figure it out im going to have it pinstriped on the bike.

last night i rusted the frame to give it that ratty look.

Are those adjustable air shocks on a Earles style fork? I already bought the cheap bike shocks for my build, but your set up looks more interesting. costy?

Nope not earles type.....I'm re doing the front suspension. It's a bike fork. With a separate air shock $54. And it pivots when inflated. I should have a better picture and possible video by end of week.....it works great.....I will be purchasing a c02 tank with a 150 psi regulator to slow down the airflow....I will then have a switch to inflate and deflate shocks....that will probably be one of my last steps......l will be working on the gas tank probably Monday. In the next couple weeks it will come together a lot more and you will get where I'm going with it....

You better hope that bike does not drop while riding and stop real quick... Your soon to be wife will not get any kids from you...lafflaff

I am not sure that back section is strong enough... Is that 3/4 tubing? You should change that top tube. I have a roller you can borrow if you want. Roll that top tube and it look alot better.

It's a good design but needs to be stronger in the critical areas.

Let me know if I can help

Hey Jeff

Ya this bike should be called the nut cracker hahaha. 3/4 in the rear tubing. It seems really strong. In the area where it bends in the back I inserted a 5 inch solid rod to prevent it from bending or folding.....I was going to round the top but I want to fit the fire extinguisher gas tank flush against the frame. In the next couple weeks It will be a functioning bike and then I'll probably consult you and change stuff around....thanks for offering some assistance.

Have you seen these guys?
Looks a lot like your build.

You know i was thinking exactly the same thing, there is a guy that builds these bikes. All slightly different but following the same build theme: same forks, wheels, layout etc.

I was actually on a bike builders Facebook page and there was one of his friends that said he built one of these bikes, i said i had a picture of a few of these bikes, he said he built them all but had sold a couple.

I also said there was a very similar bike in Australia, he knew the bike i was referring to and claimed he built the rolling chassis and sold it to this guy in OZ.

I knew exactly what you were getting at Blake, ive been a fan of their bikes for years and have a few of his bikes up in my manroom wall. Id always planned to do something similar, you just beat me to it.

Im really liking where you are going with this.

Whats your plans for an engine? I think a Honda clone and CVT would look perfect and provivd enough power. Thats what i had planned doing

tob e honest i dont know 100 percent......i was thinking really old engine......then i was thinking super high power crazy engine.......then i talk to Culvercityclassic and he offered to sell me older engine that he got running for pretty cheap.....i would rust up the casing some more......not really looking for speed......i built this to go in the back of my 59 f100 for mooneyes show in december....just out of bordem......

and here is where it will be parked if it fits :)
