Re: 3 HT motors on a trike

ya those motors arent gonna be in sync i bet he never thaught of that
I would imagine this is being built more for show than actual riding around on.

3 motors with X chambers...

And a lot of chains.

I am just curious about how he is going to start the thing.
The clutch lever to just one motor requires a pretty firm grip, I can't even imagine trying to disengage 3 at once with one lever.

And then there is pedaling up to speed and trying start 3 motors at once.
I suppose once one fires it would start the other two, but that is a lot of compression to pedal through until at least one fires.

I suppose 2 clutch levers would work.
One to the middle engine, another hooked to other two.
Lock the clutch disengaged on all 3, just pop the clutch on the center motor to get it going, then release the other one and let the running motor start the other two.

Cumbersome for actual daily riding, but functional for a show bike.

not being a hater but you cant just hook 3 engines up to a jackshaft like i said not gonna be in sync and pistons are gonna be fighting pistons

dont get me wrong the thing is awesome the way to actually make it work would be to add centi clutches problem solved

Sorry to disagree but twin and triple engine go carts ran very successfully, and still do today. Back in the 60s way before rules and sanctioning bodies set horsepower limits, go carts were run-what-ya-brung, and my dad and I had two twin engine cars and one with three, all direct driving a solid rear axle. Yes, its a challenge to get them all popping together perfectly but it can be done and when they are in sync they make a beautiful sound. This trike project was probably never meant to be a daily rider, but more of an exibition machine or all out competition trike. Tuning then becomes a normal part of the day, unlike a bike that's meant to get you from A to B reliably.

antlers, ok.
Re: 3 HT motors on a trike

It would get you from a to b reliably because you have 2 other back up engines! Yea its prolly an exibition piece but heck the had the $500 so why not. looks like fun.

this is not an exibition piece they were planing to race it on the death race last year due to some moditification and deadline they couldnt finish it on time

Running each motor to separate freewheel on a jackshaft would solve any issues.
Motors running slower wouldnt be applying any power to the axle until they spin upto the speed of the fater motor...simple.

Personally i think a single Morini or a medium powered electric setup would be alot quicker
after the extra weight for additional 2 HT motors is taken into consideration.
Does have a cool factor about it for some i guess...

thank you!! hence the cetrifugal clutch theory. and i def agree kim it's a cool piece

I had a friend in grade school in that late 60's time frame and he and his dad did the same thing as you Tom.
A pair of pull start chain saw motors with centrifugal clutches.
They never did let me ride it darn it.

Now that would be cool for the Tucson Death Race. With a pony keg gas tank and a cooler of beverages and snacks you could ride pretty comfortable from start to finish without stopping on a trike.

The freewheel clutch's used on a jackshaft kit makes sense, just mount the three motor chain single axle sprockets to one each, and course one for the pedal cranks.
With my dual clutch idea, two motors on one clutch, and the 3rd on it's own you could pedal start the 1st, and then let it start the other two.

Heck, with 3 clutches and kill buttons you could just use two motors at a time, staggering their use so one is always just cooling off while the other two work.

And yes, it does have a cool factor look ;-}

Being designed specifically for the Death Race makes perfect sense to me now.

A friends dad was a machinist and he always had the coolest toys, like the hand built YZ80 powered go-kart with a live axle and a tuned pipe. That thing would burn the tires off the rims. rotfl
