The first pic you posted of the Cyclone is from a friend of mine named Ed who is building a BTR.
I have built a Cyclone. I suppose it technically is no longer a "bicycle" as the bottom bracket is now occupied by a countershaft. It is scratchbuilt from the ground up.

| | Re: How Do or Did You A Build Board Track Racer If someone makes one with the proportions of that "Cyclone" - and for $1000 or even $1800 - buy it fast! Ask anyone who has done it - it would cost many times that. I have that much just in parts.
Granted, it's the cost of the details that causes many to compromise but that's what makes one bike different than another. The seat, stem, wheels, internal throttle, decals, etc. were all expensive or time-consuming things, not found in a bicycle catalog, that were essential to get the look I wanted. Fabricating the other parts(frame, tank, fork) to the "correct" proportions is another story. If someone offered me $1800, I would have to politely decline on principle alone - I guess I value my time too much.
Indeed, you get what you pay for.
JMO,
Keep building!

| | Re: How Do or Did You A Build Board Track Racer I agree with dmar863. Small parts add up fast! Just for example I work at ACE hardware and get a discount on my purchases and I bought a handfull of nuts and bolts for my leaf spring fork it added up to over $25. I understand the want to build on a budget after all this is a hobby. However, when fabricating "tribute" bikes there are so many parts that are not inculded in any kit. Just ask anyone who has a brooks leather saddle. Another example would be my internal throttle I spent over $65 on it plus shipping cost of anything you can't get locally. If you break it down further...custom welding can cost upwards of $30 an hour. Our time fabricating is just part of that. There is a price on our time. Not to mention your expendables such as wire for welding, tips, weld gas, grinding wheels, saw blades, etc. I could keep going and going. In conculsion we should not assume that a build will only cost a certain amount by adding up only the cost of the big ticket items like a husky frame and a kit to bolt on. Anybody who has built from "scratch" would agree. We are all in this together. |
