threadless headset

how does one determine the length of steer tube needed if buying a used fork with steer tube already cut? how much should fork steer tube be exposed to use stem and spacers? I currently have a threaded steer tube with external cups. my head set tube on frame measures 5 3/4" long.

you might have to change the headset first so you have an accurate measurement
...I could be wrong tho...I have never converted between the 2 types yet

Headsets usually specify stack height. Add that to your headtube length + spacers + handlebar stem thickness.
