Question Plugged muffler?

Well would you know it, Five years and 4,000 miles I never used a fuel filter. Never had a problem, about two hundred miles ago I decided to put one on.

Tonight after work I filled my tank up so I would not forget in the morning before work. I went to safeway to get a few thing's, as I was leaving the Safeway parking lot waiting for traffic to clear so I could go. All of a sudden my motor stopped. I looked down and fuel just pouring out of the carb.

I pulled off to the side and shut the fuel off, used a screwdriver handle and tapped the fuel bowl trying to stop the fuel. That worked, turn the fuel back on waited a minute or two to make sure it wasn't going to leak.

So I fired her back up and started my way back home, did not get very far before it flooded again and would not run. Did the same thing, got about half a mile before it happened again.

So this time I just pedal my butt home. Got home pulled carb off and sure enough some junk in the carb. No big deal, cleaned it up and re-installed the carb.

Went to take a spin to make sure it was working right. Would not start...I noticed their was no fuel in the fuel line. I opened the tank, completely empty!

Re-filled the tank...it fired right up but you should have seen the fuel coming out the muffler. It dumped a entire tank in the motor.

So it got me wondering what's the best way to check a muffler if it's plugged?? Someone made a post on cleaning the muffler but I could not find it.

My muffler does not seem to be plugged, I'm using compressed air to blow threw it and seem's to flow fine. But this does not seem like a good way to check it.

It would be pretty hard to completely plug one of these mufflers.

I have always cleaned two stroke muffler baffles two ways- either with heat and a small hammer (heat/tap/heat/tap) of easy off oven cleaner.

I don't think that's your problem though.

this happened to me yesterday..going along then float pin came out inside the bowl,
got the pin back in ,,and the lil sprung contact the pin held also bent (slightly).
well a few tweeks carb off and on and off and on... right. finally got it where it maintained a good level of fuel..float doing its thing, then a few attemps to prime gas into the spark plug hole and yeah it fired and ran with final ajdustment. then the cut off switch died,
so it got bypassed via cut off switch on blue wire instead...and then it ran ..true love.

Thank's Joe.....I don't have a problem anymore got it all taken care of. But I was just wondering, what and how to check if you did have a plugged muffler.

I just got into work and it ran great...

If you can, take it apart and visually inspect it. Then poke through the holes and scrape some off the baffle and see how much crud is there. If it got 90% plugged, it would barely run, and with no top end.

Put your hand over the end of the pipe (with a heavy glove) and see how it runs.. for a few seconds.

Yes I've thought about that, I was looking last night for a re-build kit and found one for $19.99....But if I can get a new one from Dax for $21.95...why just buy the kit...I think I'll wait for Dax to get some carbs back in stock and order one and use my old one for a spare...I just orderd a CDI and mag from him....I'm still shocked they have lasted this long so I figured I better prepare myself and have some extra so when they do go out I will not have any wait time.
