There are special switches called microswitches which are designed for this sort of thing. You can pull them out of old microwaves, amongst other places.

For now I want to try to avoid the "n" battery. I have enough battery sizes laying around.

ok but mine has gone for over 6 months and it activates only when you pull the lever. You don't have to turn it on it stays off until the brake lever is pulled JMO i like mine

Zoombicycles.com has one and you can find that one and others on e-bay try this BICYCLE TURN SIGNAL, Sporting Goods, Collectibles. Great deals on eBay! If you do a little hunting you should come up with what will work.

I have seen one that works off of a spring or something. Aero07 has one. It is battery operated with no wires. When you brake, it automatically comes on. It's a tail light as well as a stop light. PM him if you can't find something. I'm sure he'll help you out if you are interested.

Here's one idea. I used a small micro switch mounted to a bracket and wired it to my brake light. The roller on the micro switch lever is actuated by the rear wheel brake. Simple, and it works. The switch I used is sealed so its not effected my moisture.

i've got one of these: Wireless Bicycle Brake Light for Mountain Bikes, City Bike Carriers, and Dynamo Bicycles

it's got an accelerometer in it, so no wires. it doesn't work that great, like the brake light isn't that sensitive, it comes on when you stop or slow suddenly, but it makes me legal.

the plastic mount is absolute garbage, though. if you use it, you might as well throw 30 bucks into the street and watch it get run over by cars.

bairdco, where'd you buy that? I can't find it for sale on the interwebs.

Edit - Oh never mind, I found them on eBay. Search fail.

If you're okay with wiring, couldn't you use a mercury switch from a household thermostat or something like that? Or, here's one that isn't in a little glass tube and you could probably solder wires right to it. http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....5Z5Z50000050F#
