Default 80cc? Is it really? And isn't 50cc a motorcycle?

I'm getting ready to buy my first motor kit from Powerkingshop on ebay. But I have a couple questions. Do I nessessarily want the biggest I can afford...80cc? The Michigan Secretary of State says that a Moped is anything below 50cc. I don't know how the law sees motorized bikes as compared to a moped, but I think an 80cc will be seen as a motorcycle. Me no want that!!! I don't need the fastest bike on the block (even though I would be the ONLY one), just a fun ride. And I think I read (but don't remember where) that there is no such thing as a 80cc. Its actually a smaller displacement. Whats the scoop on that.

Just looking for some friendly advice. And yes, I am sure all the answers are already posted, but I am just starting to read the forum.

Thanks..

the 80cc is actually about 65 to 68 cc's. and really, it doesnt matter TOO much, but you could notice a difference. depending on how much you weigh, you can get up to about 30 on an "80"cc.

Yeah it's not an 80CC that you see out there, it is more like a 67-70cc depending on where you get it. Do more research into the legalities in your state, find out what you can and can't get away with before riding it, if a cop pulls you over and you don't know how to respond he'll probably take it.

get the 48cc,they both go around the same speed, just the bigger one is good for larger people. if you are bigger you could use the 48cc with a larger rear sprocket for more torque plus it would be more legal then the larger one.

I'm looking at kits from "boygofast" and "powerkingshop". It looks like the motors are pretty much the same. How do we know what company makes these motors and how they compare?

i got mine at gasbike.net and i got my kit fast and the engine runs great.

its best to read many peoples reviews before buying from anyone.
and compare prices, pictures and kit specs from many venders.

You could get the bigger engine and, if questioned, give an honest but misleading answer:

"Officer, this is not a moped or motorcycle, but a 'motor assisted bicycle'. It's my understanding that these bikes, equipped with less than 50cc engines, are exempt from licensing/insurance requirements to which motorcycles are subject."

Heheheheh. This statement in no way asserts that YOUR engine is 50cc, and avoids the problem of lying to an officer, which would be a crime.

I live in downriver (southgate) and I have an 80cc (67cc) from bikeberry and have past more than a few police, state included they just looked and went about their job. as long as you follow the rules of the road when your on it and watch your speed on the side walks you should not have a problem.
