32 pound fairing? I wonder what the trade off is, when you got a weedwacker for a motor? Seems a tad heavy to me.

I found out the rider of the MB was 37 years old and it was a rear mount.

MailTribune.com: You must have a license, unless it's electric

You must have a license, unless it's electric
October 29, 2008
Lately, I've seen a lot of guys riding bicycles retrofitted with little two-stroke engines and it's got me wondering. Are these things legal to ride by some guy with a suspended driver's license from a DUI?

— Bert A., e-mail submission

Well, Burt, you hit on a quirk in Oregon motor-vehicle rules involving people with suspended licenses, but it doesn't matter if the suspension is for a drunken-driving conviction or blowing through too many red lights.

Medford police Lt. Bob Hansen said people with suspended licenses cannot drive a motor vehicle — and that includes gas-powered bicycles, go-carts and the like — on public streets or roadways.

So those guys buzzing around town on the retro-cycles must be carrying valid driver's licenses to be legal, Hansen said.

There is a singular exception, however: You don't need a license to operate an electrically assisted bicycle, Hansen said, so, if that little engine strapped to the bike is a hybrid, you don't need a license to operate it ... at least until the battery dies and it kicks over to gas.

Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O. Box 1108, Medford, OR 97501; by fax to 541-776-4376; or by e-mail to youasked@mailtribune.com.

City Council encourages ‘green’ transportation..

City Council encourages 'green' transportation with revised ordinance

COMMERCE CITY - In continuing efforts to promote a more "green" Commerce City, and to aid residents economically, the City Council on Monday took steps to encourage alternative transportation in the community.

Council members approved a new draft of the city ordinance governing neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) and motorized bicycles, giving residents the option to use these vehicles to get around the city.

"The City Council is sensitive to economic conditions which are putting a strain on residents," Council Member Jason McEldowney said, "and we wanted to provide some options for savings."

The redrafted ordinance also gives the city a slightly "green-er" hue, allowing use of such vehicles, which are more fuel efficient or use alternative energy sources.

"As Commerce City works to expand its trail system, enhance recycling efforts and create other opportunities for going 'green,' it just makes sense to do this," McEldowney said.

Neighborhood electric vehicles are defined by state statute as electrically powered motor vehicles that meet certain equipment standards and do not exceed speeds of 25 mph. They are motorized golf-cart-style vehicles with windshields, headlights and turn signals.

Also allowed under the revised city ordinance are seated scooters, mopeds and motorized bicycles. NEVs and other motorized vehicles must be equipped with headlamps, taillamps, a horn, turn signals and other safety features.

Not included in this definition and not allowed on city streets are motorized devices that don't meet lighting, engine capacity or safety requirements for licensing as a motor vehicle. This includes items like motorized skateboards and standing scooters.

In keeping with the idea of easy city commuting, NEVs will not be prohibited by the city from crossing at intersections where street speed limits are faster than 35 mph; however, they should only cross those streets and not travel along them.

"This is a safety issue," said Sgt. Wayne Granger with the Commerce City Police Department. "A slow-moving device on streets where cars are traveling a good deal faster just doesn't make good sense."

The ordinance spells out limitations for the use of NEVs and other allowed motorized devices, including:
• May be used only on roads where the posted speed limit is 35 mph or slower
• May not travel faster than 25 mph
• Must be equipped, registered and licensed in accordance with state law
• Will be subject to all applicable ordinances and statutes, including financial responsibility, governing other motor vehicles in the city
• Must not exceed occupancy or load restrictions set by the manufacturer; driver and all passengers must be seated in manufacturer-style seats
• May be operated only by persons with a valid driver's license
• May not be used on sidewalks or trails unless specifically posted for such use
• Must be driven in the right-hand lane, and as close to the right-hand side as practical

For more information on the revised ordinance and NEVs, contact Sgt. Granger with the Traffic Unit at (303) 289-3794.

Additional information on specific vehicle types and uses will be made available to the public by next spring, when warmer weather will bring increased use of NEVs and other devices.

Greensboro

Local blogger's StreetPlane stolen

Local blogger's StreetPlane stolen : News-Record.com : Greensboro, North Carolina

GREENSBORO - Call it the case of the stolen StreetPlane.

One of the most unusual looking motorized vehicles in Greensboro - "WACEMALL-1," - the three-wheeled motorized bicycle owned by local blogger and former mayoral candidate Billy Jones, aka Billy the Blogging Poet, has been stolen.

Jones said he returned from work Tuesday afternoon to find the bike missing from the front yard of his home off Textile Drive.

He chained the wheels together so it wouldn't roll, but it wasn't chained to anything else. He believes two people picked it up and carried it off.

"They took the locks and all," Jones said. "It weighs over 200 pounds, and I wasn't worried anyone was going to ride it off."

The bike, built in 2006 as a part of an advertising campaign, is designed in the style of a 1920s-style aero biplane. It's been featured in newspapers, magazines and on Discovery Channel Canada.

The bike also served as a backdrop in many photographs with people throughout the community.

To say the StreetPlane is sentimental to Jones is an understatement.

He and his brother, Donny, spent more than 200 hours building the bike from scratch for a big debut in the 2006 Independence Day parade.

"I'm hurt and I'm disappointed," Jones said. "I don't understand why people feel that anything not tied down is free for the taking."

The theft also means Jones likely will have to cancel his planned appearance to ride the StreetPlane in this year's Greensboro Jaycees' holiday parade.

"I planned to don my Santa suit and ride it," Jones said.

He said he hasn't trimmed his beard since last May in preparation for playing Santa.

Jones said his insurance company has refused to pay for the loss, and he has filed a police report.

All he can do now is spread the word and hope for the bike's safe return.

Anyone with information about the theft is urged to call Greensboro police at 373-2222 or Crimestoppers at 373-1000.

Man, just sad. Wasn't Mr. Jones a member here for a bit? Maybe it was the other forum, dunno. I would chip in on a reward if they offer one.

2009 Ridley Motorbikes First Look - Motorcycle USA

Friday, November 07, 2008

Motorcycle USA doesn’t normally feature anything two-wheeled that comes with pedals, but we had to make an exception for the latest “motorbikes” from Ridley Motorcycles. Known for its production of CVT-equipped, fully-automatic cruisers, Ridley offers these vintage bikes powered by small two-stroke powerplants. All EPA compliant, the 49cc and 70cc 2-strokes power up to a respective 24 and 33 mph, with an extremely efficient 120 mpg claim. In production right now, the bicycle and engine kits are sold separately - $1440 for bike, with engines ringing in at $559 and shipping $175. For more info check out Ridley : America's Automatic Motorcycle : Home - Ed

The first ever Ridley Motorbikes were formally introduced in an unveiling today in the company's hometown of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The model line features vintage style motorbike kits that bring back the fun, ease, and vintage styling of the early 1900's. One by one the new models were introduced by Clay Ridley. In all, Ridley introduced five models including a limited production model marking the company's new line of vintage motorized bicycles, the Desert Patrol MP.

The styling and overall feel of the new vintage motorbike line is a throw back to the original motorcycle. Ridley's 1903 model features a gloss black with gold pin stripe scheme and white tires. The Twin model pays tribute to the British models of the early 20th century with its hunter green and black glossy paint, white wall tires, and "GBR 750" decorative plates. With a look straight out of WWI- the MP is "OD" green with luggage racks on the front and rear fenders. The Boardwalk model features a custom stark white and hunter green paint scheme with "Huntington Beach" decals, white wall tires, and springer style front end.

Ridley will be offering two engine kit options. The model 48 kit includes a 49cc- two stroke engine that is capable of speeds around 24 mph. For those a little more daring, the model 49 kit includes a 70cc- two stroke engine that is capable of speeds around 33 mph. Both motors are EPA compliant and offer an estimate 120 mile per gallon efficiency.

"This is an idea we have been contemplating for several years" commented Jay Ridley, Vice President of Ridley Motorcycle. "As a novelty- this is the ultimate toy. The motorbikes have a real vintage look that will leave people scratching their heads." Ridley began R&D on the project earlier this year with production starting November 1st.

Interest in the project has garnered World-wide attention with orders already booked for customers in several countries including Australia, Germany, England, Belgium, and the UAE. "Our next challenge is setting up the retailer network to handle the demand" said Don Cox the company's head of Dealer Development. "We will be offering the motorbikes to our current Ridley dealer network first and filling in the gaps where necessary."

Bicycles and engines are sold separately. Bicycle kit MSRP $1,440.00. Model 48 Engine kit MSRP $559.00. Model 49 Engine kit MSRP $559.00. Shipping in the lower 48 states $175.00.

Ridley Automatic Motorcycles are most notably known as the manufacturer of high quality American made fully-automatic motorcycles. Ridley's Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) allows the rider to cruise without manual shifting or clutching.
