Default buy old moped for vin#

im looking to buy a old moped in my town, maybe one that the engine dont run, maybe for like $50.
i can use the frame with vin number and lights plus add bicycle parts(wheels, handle bars, seat).
put my 2 stroke bike motor on it.
then a person could register it.
what does anyone think of that.

New York is pretty tough on MBers. Isn't removing and altering a VIN against the law in The Empire State?...and pretty much everywhere else too?
A "salvage" title may be the way to legally swap VINs on mopeds.
Maybe someone on this moped site can answer your question.

Sounds like a plan, only problem would be the jail time for altering a vin number. But if you have 3 to 5 years with nothing to do,go for it. ex-cop HARLEYS DAD

The thought crossed my mid several month back when going up against the li'l ol ladies
at the BMV here in Ohio. They wanted all this documentation on my $5 dollar yard sale
bicycle I was mounting the motor to. I mean it's an old 70's 10 speed that I restored
with $50 or so bucks worth of parts and some sweat. I mean it's a bicycle, how on earth
are you going to do a title search ???????

So I figured that for $68 dollars at WalMart I could buy the cheapest bicycle they had and
use that reciept and the documentation reciept I could get for the motor and take that to the
BMV with the motor mounted to it. If they would then accept it, and issue a license I'd be
off the hook. Later I would mount the motor to my own bike of choice and mount the license
on the back and skirt around the documentation that way.

Next would be to go down to the UNI district and place an ad in the student newspaper to sell
the bike to some college kid who wants a bicycle to ride to class. I'd have a xerox of the WalMart
documentation to show I bought it new.

This way, it would probably cost me $20 (if I sell the $68 dollar bike for about $50) to
get a license and be done with all the bureaucratic red tape. I think the li'l ol ladies at the BMV
don't know squat about this stuff and are afraid to stick their necks out and possibly get fired
for doing something wrong. So they just say they don't like the documentation of the bicycle
or the motor and dispose of their not wanting to deal with it that way.

As far as the moped, I don't know about the VIN swap but the parts off it used to build a bike
with may be worth it. If you could just get them to issue a license plate for your build you'll be
way ahead.

I figure if I buy the bicycle they'll still pull the same crap about the motor. But these motors were
sold by Sears in the 80's with just a reciept. There was no title on them !

So not they have me backed offed about buying a frame mount Chinese motor. I can just imagine
showing up with a new motor in the box with reciept and their wanting "futher documentation".
I can just imagine what it's like for those who build Kit Cars and want to title and license THEM.

Mopeds in AZ don't have titles but are required to have tags, other states aren't so lax. To register a moped in AZ, first you have to educate the witless drones behind the counter that their employer doesn't require titles, then produce a "bill of sale" . If the moped has been registered in AZ before in the last 5 years, the bill of sale MUST match the previous registrant's info to a "T"

its legal if you use the whole frame.
and add bicycle parts to it.
a moped frame is lke a bicycle frame anyway, but it has a vin # on it.
i wouldnt remove or alter a vin #,i would use the whole frame.
bike with moped frame.

Yes, I've built trailers in the past and it is easier than getting a X@*%%$# motorized
bicycle thru the red tape. And it sounds like Weedylot has been in the same revolving door
I've been in Fair. I'm just going to go to another BMV office in another part of the county.
(and when I ride on the road I'm going to carry a print out of OHIO's moped/motorized bicycle
codes with me for the State Highway Patrol officer who would pull me over looking to have some
fun)

When I built a trailer out of angle iron and C channel all I had to do was take it to get it weighed
and get a slip from the scales showing that it was less than 500 lbs. I used an old car rear axle
and springs from a wrecked car. No problem. A VW rail buggy is just about as easy. You tell
them the frame was manufactured at home from tubing. Ironcially they don't care about the
VW motor, tranny, or front suspension documentation. Go figure ??? But come in with a
bicycle, and a 1 hp 50cc motor mounted on it and it's like a breach of Homeland Security.
