New to the forum and need help asap.

Hello everybody. Shortly, on Monday, October 19th, 2009, I will no longer have an Arizona Driver's License. I made the mistake of drinking and driving. Anyways, the aftermath will be jail time- even as a first offender, and a suspended license for 90 days, 30 if I can manage to get a permit for work and school. The mistake is costing me a fortune, and my alternatives are not good. I have a 44 mile round trip commute between school and work, which doesn't include the time it takes me to get myself to and from jail (which is actually an additional 40 mile round trip). I don't have enough generous friends to help me out every morning and night and battling the elements (luckily its perfect weather in Arizona for riding right now) will prove too intense for me to do on my Trek MTB everyday (yes, EVERYDAY). In short, I'm ****ed.

However, I've learned that a motorized bicycle is a sort of loophole; as in, I don't need an Arizona Driver's license to operate one. Seeing as how I'm starved for time and cash right now, I need some help building a motorized bicycle on a small budget. Right now I'm riding a Trek MTB hardtail on 20"s with disc brakes. I'm not looking for anything pretty, just functional & reliable...on a budget.

If it's this bike, it looks about perfect for one of the two stroke in frame kits, which is good cause they're the cheapest to buy at about $150 a complete kit.

The only probs might be the Dtube (oversize mount usually included/easy to make) and if you have twist grip shifters.

The disk(s) will be nice to have!

Well when you get one DO NOT DRIVE IT DRUNK; I guess you learned the hard way.When I go out to party, I do not take my motorized bike. Instead, I take my standard bike and by time I'm on the way home I'm pretty well sobered up any way.
Welcome to the Forum,this place is really great, and you will get lots of help.I myself would refer you to Island Hopper(yes, with an H) American Chain Drive, however,they have been sold out for a long time on their chain drives.Thoase systems I know about and can help with.Man can I ever.

$150 is good news. That's exactly in the ball park of what I was hoping to spend.

Luckily I don't have TGSers, and am happy to hear that disc brakes are a plus.

Some questions I have right away:

Should I convert to road bike handlebars? More specifically, if I do, would it just cause unnecessary problems?
Is there any difference/advantages with road tires? Or should I just keep the bullying mountain tires I have now?
Am I going to smell like exhaust every time I ride?

Understand your predicament. I have decided to sell my Skyliner. I know that cash is tight in your situation, but I am not going to give it away. $450. It is a great bike. The engine has been broke in. Meets AZ requirement for no license, insurance or registration required.

It has a Grubee 48cc motor with pull start, centrifugal clutch, lights, rear schwinn rack comfortable schwinn seat, stock front shocks, cateye speedo, center kickstand. I will throw in a cable lock and a 1 gallon gas can for mixing fuel.

Pawn something to pay for the bike. It took me months to get $200 from the last guy I helped out and it was a PITA.

I don't recommend taking the bike to jail, best to catch the bus in and out for those few days. Hopefully you can do the time on weekends. Get a bus pass for that time, if you can't find a ride. You have some options on when you go to jail next month and December are good weather. Wear extra clothes just in case. Yes, I once was a guest of Sheriff Joe, he has been in office way too long. Take quarters for the ripoff machines that are stocked by Joe's relatives, eat stuff at work or you will only get food supplied by more of Joe's relatives.

BlakenStein: If you get a DUI in AZ you might as well just give up drinking until the whole rigamarole is over. They make you go to classes where you have to swear you are not drinking, even if it is legal to drink, you can't get out of the classes, its rigged. As in most states the whole setup is rigged.

I don't believe in drinking and driving. I've had a drink and drove home from a bar. It generates so much revenue the states go out of their way to enforce the laws rather than catching burglers or bad drivers or any other crime for that matter.

North Scottsdale. The antennas of McDowell Mountain are good place to look if your trying to find my place.

@ lordofflightaz - Thanks for the offer, but $450 is too much. I still have to pay rent and tuition, and eat food sometime this month...and I need all the scratch I can get for my $1,500 fine + the hundreds in other fees. Thanks for the heads up on tent city - I manage a restaurant, so eating bologna sandwiches will hopefully be free from my diet.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but that is A LOT of miles for a chinabuilt motorized bike. Or any motorized bike unless you have a lot of spare time.

HelloD.U.I.;If you steer good with the handle bars that are on,do not change over and make unnecessary work for yourself;#2; for tires, just use what u already have on there#3;Do not worry about smelling like exhaust.Smelling like a dirty sweaty armpit in a toilet is the worry.

Bikeguy Joe;You're right about that.It's to bad that these engines are not liquid cooled like snow mobile 2 cycle engines.

there is a guy in chandler who sells kits for 150$ on c/list
I have bought 2 from him, they were grubees and worked fine
