Ceramic pistons

Discussion at Motorized Bicycle Engine Kit Forum in the High Performance Bicycle Engine Tips forum. Does ceramic coated piston prolong motor life? I have seen people reccommend it for two strokes air cooled engines......

Thumbs up Re: Ceramic pistons

It can help in most engines. The ceramic on top will stop “hot spotting” and the antifriction coating on the side skirts will definitely help during break in. Don’t fall for buying one for $70+ you can take your piston to a powder coater and they can do it for about $20 same process and coatings just cheaper. I’m assuming since you in Australia your thinking of buying the pistons Rocksolid provides. I guess based on coating costs there it could be a deal, but definitely check before spending 3 times the cash.

Default Re: Ceramic pistons

Do powder coaters do ceramic coating or do I need to find a company that does thermal coating for like heavy industries?

Lightbulb Re: Ceramic pistons

Almost all powder coaters do ceramic coating since both types require almost the exact same tooling. If you start calling around make sure they know how small the piston is, otherwise in most cases they flat rate around $70 each, for larger (car type) pistons. I took in 10 pistons at once and got a better rate of $12 each, and sorry their all spoken for.
