I posted this here in the Tavern so as not to PO anyone with an off topic ramble.

Today I got my new Maytag Motorized... :(

Yeah, the old one died, and I did not want to replace the gearbox for nearly the price of a new one when the old one is....old.

The positive side? It was 549.00 on sale this week for 299.99.

Yay.

Does RadioShack sell components anymore?

I bought a Compaq computer system in 2000 (then built a good system about 2005). The little JBL powered speakers that came with the old Compaq were actually pretty rockin. The amp finally burned out, but speaker coils didn't. The amp's IC chip seems to be the only fried part, so I thought I might try to replace it.

The soldering would be easy, and online searches suggest that the chip (TA8227P) is common and can be had for under 5 bucks (without shipping).

You used to be able to get almost any part (resistor, capacitor, chip) from RadioShack. I called the one near me and the kid (sorry young guys) was clueless. After lots of explaining, he came up with only one item called "integrated circuit board" (obviously a breadboard, DUH). Maybe you can't order an IC from them anymore.

I don't have credit cards. I've only done online payments with checks or (mostly) money orders.

Can anybody here recommend a source for electronic components? (An actual "store", or a site that does small orders.)

Sunday the other MB here in town was hit by a car. At church a couple of people asked if it was me. Nope. I met the guy while I was building mine, he had a cruiser with a happy time engine and always pulled a trailer. I do not know any details and there has been nothing in the newspaper. Not uncommon for our rag. He definately was hit and rumor has it that a police car hit him. No word on his condition. He must not be dead as no obit.

roof racks

ok so i searched for a little while, but couldn't find any info on this subject.

i would like to throw my MB on top of my car sometimes.
my wife and i like to ride our beach cruisers at the beach, but once i put my motor and all that stuff on my bike i won't be able to throw my bike in the back of my car.

right now i don't have roof racks or a motorized bike, but i'm thinking in advance. gotta keep the wife happy.

i will most likely be building my own roof racks. i can't justify spending a few hundred on some racks i could build for $30-$50. also it seems like the price of used racks on craigslist have jumped a lot lately. not 100% sure why every one is trying to get so much for their used racks.
anyway that's not important.

i will be using the same diameter bars as yakima so i can still use their attachments if needed.

i'm just wondering if i will have any problems with the bike falling over (side-side) when it's up there.
since the bike is gonna weigh 20-30lbs heavier with the motor and all that stuff.
i was planning on using this kind of bike rack

Image: http://yakima.com/FileRender.ashx?ID=25&ImageSize=Big

with obvious modification if needed to clear engine.
i might end up making my own bike mount, similar to the one pictured.
or maybe one of them that attach to the fork might be better?

i'm worried that the bike might be too heavy and want to fall over sideways.

so have any of you used normal bike racks like this to carry your bike?
i might be willing to use a rack on the rear of my hatchback, but would rather have the racks up top for my surfboards/kayaks

What's Up With This TRAIN NOISE???

November 14, 2009

To the Editor:

It’s 5:30 am Saturday morning. I’m lying in my bed in my Murray Hill apartment, once again disturbed awake by the train a mile or so away. This happens all the time, all the time, ALL THE TIME.
The train is usually, apparently, NOT EVEN MOVING. It’s sitting down there on the tracks somewhere senselessly blowing it’s horn. Sitting motionless, senselessly blowing it’s horn in erratic patterns. Sharp, sharp sharp sharp little blasts for several minutes, then looooong, looooong, looooong. Over and over and over again. Loud, loud loud, then even LOUDER, LOUDER, LOUDER. Sometimes, occasionally it does move down the tracks, blowing it’s horn, from the back of my apartment at one side, moving slowly toward the front, and then gradually away. But then guess what? ANOTHER train shows up again not long after, and usually repeats the very same kind of thing, usually NOT EVEN MOVING!.
This goes on night after night after night after night- all year long. I’ve put doors up against my windows, and foam padding behind that- with little effect: I still hear the train and it still wakes me up and keeps me awake. In fact, given the general area I live in, which is quite populated, the train must in fact be disturbing THOUSANDS of people. I’ve asked myself: What on earth is the purpose of this insane ritual? Is it to wake us up and get us out of bed for work? The sirens that start up near sunrise, and the obnoxious yelling and obvious intentional noise that the garbage men theatrically make before dawn on Monday morning can be explained off that way, but this insane train noise goes on at all hours of the night, every night of the week.
There it goes again! It’s been a half hour or so since it blasted me awake and it’s still out there now going off. Sometimes it’s going off while I’m just going to sleep, and other times in the dead of night. Is it just because this is a lower income area, and the powers that be in America have more disdain for the rest of us all the time these days? Perhaps…..
But from a personal point of view- and a very unfortunate one- I know this to be some kind of happening all over America. You see, this is my third residence somehow near train tracks (although this one now is not really very near, and I doubt that I’d be disturbed by any normal train noise here- but this is indeed unusual) My own paranoia wants to take it personal, but it’s NOT personal- it’s happening to tens of thousands of us, maybe hundreds of thousands.
My house that was flooded up in Indiana lay on the other side of a highway, pretty much out in the middle of nowhere, where the train comes through day and night. That train is always moving and has some motivational excuse: there are a couple of small street crossings. But it’s EXTREMELY high-volume blast would knock your socks off! There are crossings, but everyone knows they are there, and the train comes through all the time, but night or day, there’s no sleeping when it passes through.

Before that, it was Needles California for four years, which lies on what has to be the busiest railroad left in America. Only one very very small road crosses the track at all there, about fifty yards from the station. But the trains coming into town have to blast their horns from miles out. And the blasts can be heard all over town. At first I was unfortunately right near the tracks, but later moved a mile up on the mountainside. Not much difference, especially in the winter when the dense air carries the sound even more.
So now it’s been nine years now, near some lousy tracks in one place or another. And it’s always this same senseless kind of thing. He’s still out there now, periodically sounding off, and I think this one is really the most senseless and inexplicable location. Safety? Not when it’s just sitting there, blasting away for an hour. Get us up to work? Not at all hours of the night! It’s only going to have people stressed out and tired all day from a lack of sleep. Class warfare, against the lower incomes? Whatever it is, I’ve really come to feel like its sort of an attack. It’s some kind of attack on America, no less of an attack than 9-11. It simply can’t be explained off with any real defensible logic, and it’s going night after night, year after year in all kinds of places in America, and surely disturbing a great great number of people. It’s damaged my own fragile health (I‘m no “Spring chicken“!), and cost me untold hours of sleep, that I often have to try and make up in daylight hours. What a waste of time!
So what IS it with these trains, and why does so much of America put up with it. Has sensible and necessary protest and dissent fallen that much out of political correctness in this age of conformity? Can “CORPORATE” do as they please to the rest of us like this again? Something should be done. I’m writing this letter to the newspaper. Maybe I’ll send it to Congress. Do they even care?

Mope/MB Hybrid

Anybody else think this might be a good idea ...
remove the "bad" motor from an otherwise good moped and
install an MB motor setup.

I'm thinking that a friction drive (like the Staton) would
be neat on the rear of a "stripped down" moped like the one in the web photo below
(imagine original engine removed).

Of course, there are lots of other possible configurations too. Maybe even
turn it electric with a hub motor.?

Could be a good way to get a sturdy, heavy duty type bike fairly
cheap for a "unique" build.

Moped + MB = ?

Dogs and Pies

It is a cold snowy day in Denver and my wife felt like baking. She has these new pie crust molds that make little fall leaves so she baked a pumpkin pie and a dozen leaves, placed the leaves on the pie and baked it. It came out looking like something from Better Homes and Gardens or some creation you'd see on the cooking channel. It was in the high 30s so she put it on the table on our back porch to cool and we started making dinner. Now, we have two dogs; one a Golden Retriever and the other a Tibetan Spaniel. The spaniel is a 14 pound ball of fur that has twice the intelligence of the retriever and rules the roost when it comes to the two dogs. While we were cooking dinner the dogs went out to do their after-dinner business and a few minutes later the retriever wanted in but there was no sign of the little one so I let her stay out while we finished making our meal. As we sat down to eat she began to scratch at the back door so I let her in not paying any attention to the pie.
After dinner was finished, Char decided she would have a slice of the pie she had baked and went out on the back porch to get it...I heard her scream and ran to see what the problem was. She came in the back door with her pie but it didn't look like the one she had set out to cool. It was half eaten. Most of the little pie crust leaves were gone and there was a hole the size of...well, a Tibetan Spaniel face in it. We're watching the little dog now to see what effect a half of a pumpkin pie has on a 14 pound dog. I found it funny...Char failed to see the humor.

what a day!!!!!

been out riding having a good time gettin my latest engine broke in. Did a couple of wide open runs then the engine lost power and shook like a dog passing razorblades. I knew right away a mount had let go
so I limp it home. Broke the rear mounting bolt right behind the rear sprocket. First time
I've broke one figured it was about time. I get the engine off and it broke off just under flush so I break out the left hand drill bits would not come out by drilling with the left hand bits and I could not get an easy out to remove it luckily I'd drill it straight right through the stud so I went and drilled it out and re taped the threads all this went smooth got the engine back on the bike. I look and the front tire is flat!! I'd just put in a new tube yesterday.
So I take the tire off cussing as I work on it then the bike falls over more cussing. I find 3 holes in the tube patch the tube and feel the inside of the tire I find a bunch of tiny thorns all over inside so I dig them all out now I look and the rear tire is flat great! Same thing looks like the wind has blown sand burrs into the streets and I think I've got all of them off the street and collected in my tires.
Well I go ahead and fix the front tire. Mount it up and inflate it let the air out and then reinflate it then I did I hear a small pop and now I have a big black bubble looking me in the face I drop the tire looking for the valve stem remover before I can get the air out the tire does it for me with my ears ringing from the big bang and the old Snake wanting to know just what I'm doing. I decide its time to call it a day and quit messing with the bike.
So now all I need to do is either replace 2 tubes or replace both tires and tubes. I think I'll replace tires and tubes.
Funny I haven't had a flat in 3 years now I can't keep air in them.
Its been one of them days.

Yesterday I was in the local Ace Hardware and I noticed that they had a MB at the front of the store with a sign saying they were selling the engine kits for $149.95. I of course had to give it a looking over. It was definitely a china girl engine but it had a round cylinder/cylinder head instead of a square one. I haven't seen one like that before. I didn't ask if this was something Ace in general was carrying or if this particular store just got some to sell but it is still interesting to see the kits in such a "mainstream" type environment.
