I built a new rear engine mount with ceramic bearings and welded it to the frame. It was clamped before. I changed the cylinder, piston and head to high compression. Changed the reed, intake and carburetor. It is the dellorto racing 21mm. The engine should be close to the 9.4 (3.2 to start) hp engine. Only the ignition is different. The exhaust is new. It is a Simonini pipe with a carbon fiber silencer (loud). I cut the head pipe off and rewelded it. I welded the manifold (made out of water pipe) for my engine to the pipe as well. I powder coated most of the parts flat black. Changed the gearing a little and added a SBP heavy duty freewheel. I changed the bearings in the front hub to ceramic. The tires are new as well. The frame is filled with lead and my top speed so far is 54mph. I'm 59 yrs old and my goal is 60 mph by the time I'm 60 yrs old. lol

By the way, I have about 1200 miles on the Nexus 8 speed hub, without incident.

My Diamond Topgana

This Bike was donate to me by a co-worker after he found out the frame on other bike broke.
Result of front motor that was appeared tight but still managed to vibrate thru.
It was a very tight fit but with an hour or so of dremel work.
Had to widen the mouth of motor mounts.
I took my older motor port matched the intake and exhaust,
cleaned the carbon off the piston and ring.
Removed the cyl base gasket replaced with hi temp silicone.
Sanded the head down a few thousands on glass to keep it flat.
New style Carb for the 66.
I have to say I like the front suspension over the solid.
This is my daily driver and the old bike had close to 3500 miles before the frame went.
But the old motor is running better than every with the jug maintenance and the
slight mods I made thanks to the many that have shared.

Just enjoying the miles,
Homer

Bike Bug/Suburban rehabilitation (Schwinng!)

I have a very special project I would like to share.

Mrs Joe and I are doing a rehab/restoration of a mid 70's Schwinn Suburban, and a Bike Bug Auto- I think it's an auto, it has some kind of free wheel set up my other one did not have.

Why Mrs. Joe? No, it's not going to be for her. She suggested and insisted on being in on this one because the pile of parts being spoken of here belong to our son in law. Deeper than that, the Schwinn belonged to our son in law's father, whom passed away when he was a child.

Our son in law got the Bike Bug as-is (really bad) at a yard sale, but in the present condition, only clamped it to the "bike in the shed", presumably, as a place to store it until the motivation set in to do something with it. (I remember those days....3 year old kids....working 12 hours a day....all the resposibilities of young married life...)

The bike has been sitting rotting away for a few decades in a storage shed, (at his mothers house in another town not too far away, but far enough to forget about the bike or the engine) but now it will see a "rehabilitation". I say that instead of "restoration" because to restore it, would entail making it factory fresh, or "better". What we are aiming for is making the bike and engine ride-able, usable and reliable. Some nice paint, and maybe even some new frame stickers would be a bonus.

The aluminum is pretty bad, as is the chrome, and the point is to make the bike as ridden, not as new.....but who knows where this may lead.

The only limiting factor I suppose, is that I have to have it done by Christmas this year. Thanks Mrs. Joe, for the "sudden application of forced motivation" other wise known as "a deadline". ;)

I will post pictures as we go, then of course just like "reality tv" the Big Reveal will be posted later on.

The NEW Novi

Some new pictures today of THE NOVI (hence the pegasus tank, inspired by 1950's Indy car)

Finally got 'er outside in Florida and running-

Note new 27" wheel on the front- for an even BETTER roll

AND CAMPAGNOLO Road Brake on the front- SUPER brake and a great stopper!

I was pretty much cruising with traffic when I wanted, and never even opened it up- with 36 sprocket-

shutting off at intersections, passing the school, and arriving at Starbucks, and then firing up at long stretches in between. Fantastic!

Red Schwinn World Traveler- THE STREET SEINE- now under construction!- 49cc slant, with chrome tank and chrome extended muffler

The WayBack Machine

This bike started out from humble beginnings. An early '70s Murray and about the same vintage Western Flyer. Full strip and rebuild with a few added touches just to make things interesting. I had newsboy bikes as a kid (to actually deliver newspapers) but they were police auction bikes and nothing like the deluxe ones of the day. Actually I wish I still had my old Rollfast. What a tough beast.
The powerplant is a Subaru 4 stroke EHO35 driving a pocket bike X2 CVT
Anyway, A small list of features added:
*Springer front fork
*Ducktail full fenders
*Deluxe cruiser seat
*Grubee freewheel rear hub w/ 11ga. spokes and band brake
*Sturmey/Archer drum brake front hub w/12 ga. spokes
*7ah 12V battery for lighting/horn system
*12V-6W bottle generator to recharge said battery
*Slightly overboard lighting system w/turn signals, volt/amp gauges coming soon
 (I commute in the dark)
OK, on with the show
