I'd think something like a horn button mounted on the left handlebar grip could be used for a braking signal. It's a momentary contact for an electric signal to the lamp.

I would think a small red light emitting diode could be set up on the handle bar so that anytime the brake lamp is lit the diode will light. If it doesn't it may alert the driver to the brake lamp bulb being burnt out etc.
